It Is Only Ambitious People Who Achieve Success!

That makes sense, right?

My initial gut reaction to that statement is, ‘Of course, absolutely”. But then something twitched in my consciousness and I decided it needed more investigation!

After all, what is ambition?  And is it a pre-requisite for success?

And what’s success? Can you reach it without ambition?

Here are the dictionary definitions to start getting a clear understanding of what we’re talking about.

  • Ambition: From the Latin, ambitio, meaning “the desire for honour or power”
  • Success: From the Latin, seesucceed, meaning “accomplishment of desired end”

Re-interpreting the title statement from these definitions, I would now say “Success comes from the focussed desire for a specific outcome.”

To achieve success you do not simply need ambition, you have to decide how much you want that success. And there will be much you’ll have to give up to allow your desire to come to fruition.

“What are you willing to give up to achieve what you want?”

The things you give up depend on what you want.

  • If you want to get into the best shape of your life, you’ll give up beer, junk food, lazy nights on the sofa.
  • For business success, it might be trying to please others, seeking approval, saying yes without careful thought about the consequences.

Ambition is simply a desire, alone it gets you nothing. Allied with the right habits, your ambition can be achieved.

Your ambition will encourage persistence. Passion prevents failures stopping your progress.

And you’ll need plenty of discipline. Stay focussed on your vision and not what others think

And a good dose of determination. No time for excuses when you are determined for results.

And ambition fuels creativity. Enthusiasm sparks ideas in your imagination.

As I was watching the Olympics from Rio recently, I was so inspired to see Andy Murray on the Podium receiving another gold medal for Team UK. I thought about the persistence, discipline and determination he has been working with for at least four years all for that gold medal, all for in Andy’s case, a final 4 hours and 2 minutes on the court against Juan Martin del Potro to prove that right now he is the best in the world.

To me, all the gold medallists’ smiles weren’t only for winning. They’re also a representation of the hours of continual preparation and pain they put themselves through to reach this moment.

Because that moment made it all worth it.

I felt so proud and pleased for them all.

Yes, ambitious people achieve success. You need that passion, that fire in your belly.

And you’ll need that focus in your head and that love in your heart for what you are doing.

But ambition alone won’t get you there. No matter what you’re going for, sacrifices will have to be made along the way.
