It’s Not What You Do….

If you’ve been receiving miviews for a while you’ll know that sometimes I see something that really makes me think and I keep returning to it, seeking a deeper message….

And, you’ve guessed it, it happened again recently and I thought of the familiar words, “It’s not what you do but how you do it” that makes you different, special and unique.

Many of us struggle to come up with a ‘USP’, a ‘difference benefit’ or simply something to make people take notice of us, so when I saw these guys I was blown away and wanted to share their ingenuity with you.

You might not think there’s much room for differentiation in window cleaning. After all, its a simple, fairly basic service.

But these guys thought differently, because their ultimate customer is a child, a child who is sick and lying in a hospital bed rather than playing football in the park or riding a pony.

So, rather than simply cleaning the windows, they provide fun, fantasy, adventure; an escape from the pain, illness and brain numbing boredom of being sick for the children in this hospital.

Three guys, dressed up as Batman, Spiderman and The Incredible Hulk roll up for work. Yes, they are there to clean windows, but they provide so much more than that.

You can see the big smiles on the kids faces as their superheroes suddenly appear behind the soap suds at their window, can’t you? You can feel the warmth in their heart as they smile not only at Superman, but at the other kids experiencing the same excitement at the same time….

What joy these guys bring to these children with just a little bit of imagination and thought for the real people who benefit from what they offer.

What do they do?

They clean windows, but in the way they do it – their ‘how’ – brings excitement, joy and laughter to the kids, their parents, the staff and I am sure themselves.

Now here’s a question for you to put some mental muscle into, “What do you do, who do you really do it for and how do you do it?”

I’m off to spend some time pondering that one myself.
