Say The Second thing That Comes Into your head

Say the second thing that comes into your head

Another sunny day to enjoy……

After my son Martins’ recent 17th birthday party, I was surprised to hear of yet another wrestling night (by night – I mean a WWE program (wrestling) from theUSA that runs from 1am till 4am…..and I only do nocturnal in exchange for a long haul holiday!)

I was further surprised when, after my glorious evening walk in the relaxing nature and sunlight of Arthur seat, I returned home to find my living room full of teenage boys.

Following a deep, calming breath I commented, “Martin, I thought the wresting was at 1am?!”

Now I remember when he was a small boy, coming to speak to me with an air of authority – “Mum, I need to ask you a question” I stopped to give him my full attention and said, “OK”….”BUT” he said….. “Please don’t answer me in your shouty voice!”

I was stunned……..Me ….…Shouty voice? ….

Is that what he thought?…..Ok no need for you to answer – he’s already done that!!

And I was only doing my best….As a parent…As all parents do!

Although I enjoyed the humour and the honesty of the kid years later, at the time…I kept thinking, Me, Shouty voice, Really??

Anyway back to today……Then came the crunch…..

”We can’t all fit in my room”

“HA” I thought – gotcha!!!! That would be that untidy room that I really try not to moan about…..”Is there a floor under all this stuff?” where the shouty voice would definitely be worthy of resurrection…..

But I managed to control the quiet inner voice!

All mothers (and fathers) of teenage boys will know exactly where I am coming from here……

So maybe it’s time for my negotiation skills to come into play again – if you are going to be in my living room, I need to be in your room so you need to tidy it…..but all this needs to be dealt with without the shouty voice rearing it’s head.

Don’t we learn so much from our kids………..

All advice, help and experience greatly appreciated….

Jane Quinn
