The Nepalese New Year has dominated my week in a phenomenal way – it has let me meet people I haven’t seen for a while and allowed me to invite close friends for an entertaining evening of enjoying beer, fabulous food and different dance that is poles apart from our own culture.
This made me reflect on our own New Year where everyone has an intention or expectation of fun, perhaps influenced by alcohol, but fun in the general sense of the word.
What really surprised me was, not long after we arrived for the Nepalese New Year – perhaps all of seven minutes, there was an explosive, “HAPPY NEW YEAR” and a familiar hand shake, hug and hilarity and which was great, however my confusion was aborted when I was reminded of time difference so it was in deed New year in Nepal…….……….where, of course, it was midnight…..
Then came an explosive dance by a stunning (aren’t they all) Nepalese girl in a gorgeous red outfit which led into the evening very well. We all enjoyed a meal and danced in the throngs before going home.
A reflection of the evening revealed that different cultures can come together in unity and enjoy not only each others company but share in their cultures and religion in a way that brings the whole world together and makes life a good dance and a great place to be in.
No matter who you are, where we were born brought up, whenever you find your self in a culture that is not your own and you are celebrating with them – just sit back, go with the flow and most of all enjoy!!
