What Would Jane Do?

When talking with a client about their intentions, we stumbled upon the powerless feelings we are all faced with when we evaluate the evils of all our options, possibilities and choices.

  •  Do I need this before I can do that?
  • Is it best to issue important emails on a Monday or Tuesday morning?
  • Do calls have to stop between noon and 1pm because everyone out to lunch?

Am I qualified enough? Should I ask for help? What if I mess this up?

Most of us are prone to reams of uncertainty in our heads when we want to do something and we spend far too long wrangling with all the possible options, (those we can think of), before we make a decision.

In the words of Jim Rohn,

“Start with wherever you are and with whatever you’ve got

Sometimes it’s not so important to do the right thing at the right time, as much as simply doing something to get going and then moving with a flexible approach along the way.

Another way to look at this dilemma when we face it is to consider someone we look up to, someone we respect and ask the question, what would they be doing right now?

I quite often wonder, what is Richard Branson doing right now? I bet he’s not consumed by the decision dragon, more like he’s already dealt with it and has moved onto something else!!

One of my clients say they often imagine I am sitting on their shoulder (in a supportive way!) and think, what would Jane do?

One of my friends, when she’s feeling powerless asks herself, ‘What would Madonna do?’

This is really powerful, as you stop thinking in your limited, anxious usual way and open yourself up to other possibilities and different outcomes.

I think this technique is really well worth sharing.

So the next time the dithery demon tries to take some precious time from you, shake it off, and ask yourself, ‘What would ‘Jane/Richard/Elvis or whomever’ be doing and let it move you to act.

If you want to take it one step further, to encourage yourself to ‘work like someone is watching you,’ put a photo of your idol on your desk so they can really keep an eye on you…….devour those demons!!

One more thing…..don’t keep us a secret, please share this.

Till the next time,

Kind Regards,

Jane Quinn
